The stat sheet, decoded — every abbreviation we use

Football stat sheets run on shorthand. Most of it is obvious once you've seen it once, some of it is genuinely new. Here's the shorthand we use on this site — and the advanced stuff you'll meet as the game gets more measured.

Goals & assists

GGoals
Goals scored.
AAssists
The final pass or touch before a team-mate scores.
GSGoals scored
Same as G — used on some stat sheets.
GCGoals conceded
Goals let in (by the team or the goalkeeper).
OGOwn goals
A goal accidentally put into your own net.

Shooting & passing

SHShots
Total shots taken.
SOGShots on target
Shots that would go in if not saved or blocked by the keeper.
KPKey passes
A pass that directly sets up a shot.
PAPass accuracy
Share of attempted passes that reach a team-mate, as a %.

Discipline & fouls

FCFouls committed
Fouls given away.
FSFouls suffered
Fouls won — times he was fouled.
YCYellow cards
Cautions.
RCRed cards
Sending-offs.
YRCSecond yellow
A second yellow in a match that becomes a red.

Goalkeeping

SVSaves
Shots stopped by the keeper.
CSClean sheets
Matches finished without conceding.
PKAPenalties faced
Penalty kicks the keeper had to face.
PKSPenalties saved
Penalty kicks the keeper kept out.

Playing time

MPMatches played
Appearances (also written GP, games played).
MINMinutes
Minutes on the pitch.
STStarts
Matches started in the eleven.
SUBSubstitute appearances
Matches come on from the bench.

Advanced analytics

xGExpected goals
The probability a shot becomes a goal (0–1), from historical data.
xAExpected assists
The likelihood a given pass turns into an assist.
xAGExpected assisted goals
The xG of the shot that came directly from a player's pass.
npxGNon-penalty xG
A player's xG with penalty kicks removed.
PPDAPasses per defensive action
Pressing intensity — opponent passes allowed before a tackle/interception. Lower = more pressing.
PrgPProgressive passes
Passes that move the ball a meaningful distance toward goal.
PrgCProgressive carries
Carrying the ball forward at your feet.
VAEPValuing actions by estimating probabilities
Rates every on-ball action by how it changes the chance of scoring or conceding.
OBVOn-ball value
How much a player's actions raise the team's chance of scoring.
PSxGPost-shot xG
Shot quality after it leaves the foot — the goalkeeper's version of xG.

What we actually track here. Youth tournaments rarely publish shots, xG or the rest, so this journal keeps the honest basics — G, A, MP and W/L/D, logged by hand.
